Yesterday, the internet was going nuts over our Clipse x KAWS collaboration, the first of three cover stories from Complex’s October/November issue (click here if you missed it). Well now it’s time to feast your eyes on our second cover: Young Jeezy, with illustration by Philly graf kingpin ESPO. Both artists are known for flipping American capitalism on it’s head, so the partnership was a natural fit. The issue hits stands on October 6, but you can check out the full interview by Sacha Jenkins and a behind the scenes video now. Stay tuned tomorrow for the release of our third cover—the issue’s sexy female side.

Style Breakdown..

Interview w/ Complex Magazine..

Hip-hop may be an ever-changing beast, but one thing is constant: The Clipse’s sense of self. They might not be shouting it from the rooftops, but they clearly think they’re the best in the game—which is a little surprising, given their track record. After receiving a platinum plaque for their eerie and exceptionally witty debut, Lord Willin’, they fell into label purgatory. Four years and two mixtapes later, the even darker Hell Hath No Fury had critics and fans fawning, but still bricked like a Kwame Brown jumper. Despite the difficulties, Pusha T and Malice still believe in the Clipse. And somehow, their bravado is understandable; it’s what’s gotten them here, after all. When the Internet became saturated with no-name MCs and endless mixtapes, they concluded that fans value quality over quantity. When the economy cratered, they figured their fashion taste could sustain a clothing brand. And when they signed their Re-Up Gang label deal with Sony, they felt strong enough to branch out from under the Neptunes’ wings and recruit outside production for their third album, Till The Casket Drops. In fact, that unshakable certainty is probably why our boy KAWS jumped at the chance to design their album art (and this story). The whole thing may sound more crazy than confident, sure—but the best usually are.
It seems like Till The Casket Drops is very disconnected from the industry as a whole. Like, "Fuck that, this is what we're on."
Malice: This album is like redemption for me. We’ve been through so much with the label, with so much in our lives. Around Hell Hath No Fury, it was just rough times. You could probably hear it in the music. We had a lot of dead weight around us that got cleared out. This time around, everything is freer; we’re in a happier place. You can really hear the change in the music. Listen to “I’m Good.” You can feel it that we’re better. Definitely. Hell Hath No Fury is about when it was more raw. This album is more along the lines of Lord Willin’. And you know Hell Hath No Fury is my favorite album.

Why is it your favorite album?

Pusha: It’s everything I want to hear in rap. My taste isn’t the most commercial of tastes. When I put on an album, I find those records I like. If I’m listening to Ross, I’m listening to “Mafia Music.” If I’m listening to Jeezy, I’m listening to track 17. That’s what I want to hear.

Is there any push to become more commercial this time around?

Pusha: I don’t think so. Sonically, we always go above and beyond in our efforts to disrupt radio. It’s always about being different. Our radio is never conventional anyway. “Grindin’”—no hook, but big record. “Mr. Me Too”—very minimal.

Malice: “What Happened To That Boy.”

Pusha: Yeah, you know. We’re always about being different. I like to call this album hip-hop on steroids, because everything is to the third power. The flow, the sound, everything is just in your face, and driving.
Lord Willin’ was responsible for bringing an emphasis on lyricism back to drug rap. Then, that whole style blew up and become commercialized over the last decade. As all that was happening, you guys were public about your disdain: “Fuck that other shit. That shit is wack.”

Pusha: No, we’re just better.

Malice: [Laughs.]

Cudi also talks to me about a few tracks on the new album including “Heart Of A Lion (Kid Cudi Theme Music)” and “My World”. He also breaks down the Acts in the Scene List and the titles behind them.

Finally the he tells him that he is working on his next album but before he puts that out, he wants to release a “compilation album” working with the likes of Kenna, Green Day, Chad Hugo from the Neptunes and many others.

Changed Man.? (( SMH.! ))

CB acts all sheepish here ( why is he hiding behind auto-tune.?), but the threat implicit in this tune's "it ain't over" refrain smacks of abusive pattern behavior, not love. If this treacly piece of pop pap - complete with tender acoustic fingerpicking and three self-pitying refs to Everybody Hates Chris - persuades "baby" to keep Brown around, expect the worst.

New iPods with built-in cameras are expected to take center stage at Apple's Sept. 9 product announcement. Also possible is a major update to iTunes, perhaps to add social networking, though it is less likely.

The expected tablet introduction is apparently off the table, perhaps until next year.

Here's my reading of the marketplace, user expectation/demand, and the rumors we've all heard:

It seems clear that iPods are going to get cameras in this year's refresh. Photography features are the only thing the current models lack that large numbers of people provably want and will use.

Besides photography--both stills and movies, depending on the model--we might see smaller and better, but I would be surprised if we see cheaper. Except at the high-end where iPods are still pricey, especially in this economy.

I think if Apple was going to add a social networking feature we'd have heard rumors of it, but it is a valid direction for iTunes to head. I am 50/50 on whether it happens with this release.

Apple could decide to add music social networking with a partner, but that would surprise me. Music Store deserves its own social networking and, because it could be tightly coupled to music purchasing, I expect Apple to go on its own.

Social networking for iPods will happen, but it may not be happening quite yet.

"It's only rock and roll, but we like it" is Apple's hint for this event, which is seen as evidence that it is just an iPod/iTunes event and no tablet will be introduced.

Most iPod customers were not alive when Mick Jagger first uttered the phrase, which says more about Apple's aging PR and marketing staff than it does anything else. It does, however, lower expectations for the event.

It is not impossible, however, that a member of the Rolling Stones or their content might be somehow involved in the announcement.

It would be good for Apple to do something to update Apple TV, but I am not expecting it at this time.

My guess is we will hear something about Music Store content, perhaps a major addition or something, but I have no feel for that at all.

Overall, this should be an evolutionary hardware announcement--new shiny toys in time for Christmas--not anything too incredible. Though with Apple you never call tell and I'll hope to be surprised.
